The majority of patients who are diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer do not have an actionable driver mutation. Around 80% lung cancer is diagnosed without any targetable alterations. In this case, the treatment should start with chemotherapy like Cisplatin, Carboplatin, Pemetrexed etc. Now, immunotherapies like Pembrolizumab, Atezolizumab are also indicated in the first line treatment. Chemotherapies have side effects like fatigue, bone marrow suppression etc.
Most of the patients are on the other hand are diagnosed with metastasis which makes the treatment difficult. Many of the patients relapse within few months after being treated with the chemotherapies/immunotherapies.
Angiogenesis is very important to understand in cancer. Angiogenesis is the process of generation of new blood vessels. Blood vessels are very crucial in supplying nutrients to the cancer cells. Tumor growth and metastasis depend on angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis triggered by chemical signals from tumor cells in a phase of rapid growth. Blocking angiogenesis is an established way to prevent the cancer progression.
